In the third novel in the series, set in Leningrad in 1953, Senior Militia detective Revol Rossel attends a hit and run where a man and woman were killed. Shortly thereafter a Cornel from the MGB arrives and instructs the Melitia record the hit and run as an accident, but Rossel soon learns it was no accident and that the deceased holds a huge secret. An extremely well written and detailed historical murder mystery. Beautifully and brutally descriptive. 5/5

A fast-paced mystery thriller exploring an underworld which ostensibly ties into all aspects of human endeavour. The novel overflows with unique and unpredictable twists and turns making it a true modern adventure. 4/5

Gangland by Chuck Hogan

A decent era crime novel, set in the Chicago syndicate in the late 70s and early 80s. The novel lacks some of the familiar feel of fictionalised real events / people, but the era chosen is very accurately depicted and told with the intimacy of a writer who lived in the era and partook in the event. The story is interesting enough but a little too familiar. 3.5/5
