The Darkest Heart by Dan Smith

One of the most beautifully written (non-classic) novels I've ever read. The story and surrounding philosophy is pretty gut-wrenching at times, but the final act is a bit too Disney to gel with the nature of the characters created. 4/5 (would easily have been a 5/5, with a more believable plot twist).

The sequel is somewhat of a carbon copy of this novel but set in a slightly later time period featuring different families with different occupations, but the storyline remains exactly the same. The wiring style is however unique interesting and engaging.

The Madwomen of Paris by Jennifer Cody Epstein

A historical fiction murder mystery set in 19th-century Paris in the famous Salpêtrière asylum. The story centers around two women, Laure and Josephine. Laure is a former patient at the asylum and current ward attendant, who is desperate to leave and find her missing sister, Amélie. Josephine is a young woman with amnesia who arrives at the asylum covered in blood and suffering from trauma. As the novel progresses, Laure and Josephine form a bond while navigating the questionable treatments within the asylum and attempting to find ways out of their respective dilemmas.  Very well researched and more gripping than the title infers.  Fact and fiction intertwine very believably and seamlessly. 4/5

Scarlet Angel by S.T. Abby

In this third novella in the story of the romantic relationship between FBI profiler, Logan Bennet, and serial killer Lana Meyer, the focus moves to the relationship between Hadley and Lana and the preparation for the final stages of Lana's revenge plan. A fast-paced novel focused more on further developing the principle cast.  Despite this, there is sufficient action and suspense.  As mentioned previously he characters however remain somewhat thin and the writing straightforward.  3/5
