The second Rollercoaster ride with the inner monologue with NZ serial killer, Joe Middleton. Cleaver is an absolute genius at writing black comedy / horror noir. 5/5
Ruby’s mother, Deena disappeared when Ruby was only four years old and while Deena and Lucas were fighting an ugly custody battle. Now living with her controlling father, Lucas, and his enabling mother, Ruby remembers almost nothing about her mother and is not permitted to ask any questions about her. Nessa is however as from the outset convinced that Lucas was responsible for her sister's disappearance. The novel utilises the dual timelines (some 10 years removed) exceptionally and the first person accounts of Ruby and Nessa are richly written and seamlessly integrated. 5/5
"Game", is the first book in a trilogy. The protagonist, Henrik "HP" Pettersson, an unemployed 31 year old, with a taste for excitement and gambling, finds himself drawn into a mysterious game. The game starts with seemingly simple tasks, but quickly escalates into risky missions that transform HP's ordinary life. As HP progresses, he must decide whether the thrill and rewards are worth the increasingly dangerous situations he finds himself in. A fast-paced mystery thriller exploring an underworld which ostensibly ties into all aspects of human endeavour. The novel overflows with unique and unpredictable twists and turns making it a true modern adventure. 4/5
A decent era crime novel, set in the Chicago syndicate in the late 70s and early 80s. The novel lacks some of the familiar feel of fictionalised real events / people, but the era chosen is very accurately depicted and told with the intimacy of a writer who lived in the era and partook in the event. The story is interesting enough but a little too familiar. 3.5/5
